Colin Powell to Endorse Barack ObamaOctober 15, 2008
Colin Powell, the Republican and former Secretary of State under President G.W. Bush, former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former National Security Advisor, is poise to endorse a candidate for President of the United States. It is expected that the 71 year old Powell will announce his support of Senator Obama sometime in the near future.
Powell has been a critic of the way the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been handled, although he shares a great burden of being a key player in convincing the American people of the veracity of false intelligence in an appearance before the United Nations that was widely watched and trusted. Powell would join a growing list of Republicans and military heavyweights that are supporting Senator Obama, one that would be highlighted when Powell makes his announcement.
This is sure to be a blow to Senator McCain and his flailing campaign that seems to be in the death throes of hate mongering, and negative campaigning. Polls and analysis show McCain’s continued use of negative tactics are decreasing his own favorablity ratings, and thus decreasing his support. The Vice Presidential nomination of Sarah Palin, embroiled in controversy and viewed as an inexperienced and dangerous pick have further eroded John McCain’s support. A Powell endorsement of Senator Obama would no doubt come as a crushing blow to the aspirations of the 72 year old Senator from Arizona.
