Palin- More Power to VP- Not Executive Branch?

October 2, 2008

Sarah Palin claims that the Vice Presidency not only has more power than a vote in case of a tie in the Senate, but agrees with VP Cheney that it should have ambiguous oversight.

IFILL: Governor, you mentioned a moment ago the constitution might give the vice president more power than it has in the past. Do you believe as Vice President Cheney does, that the Executive Branch does not hold complete sway over the office of the vice presidency, that it it is also a member of the Legislative Branch?

PALIN: Well, our founding fathers were very wise there in allowing through the Constitution much flexibility there in the office of the vice president. And we will do what is best for the American people in tapping into that position and ushering in an agenda that is supportive and cooperative with the president’s agenda in that position. Yeah, so I do agree with him that we have a lot of flexibility in there, and we’ll do what we have to do to administer very appropriately the plans that are needed for this nation. And it is my executive experience that is partly to be attributed to my pick as V.P. with McCain, not only as a governor, but earlier on as a mayor, as an oil and gas regulator, as a business owner. It is those years of experience on an executive level that will be put to good use in the White House also.

Nuts. This notion that the VP is not in the Executive Branch is asinine.

Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution (Article II Deals with the Executive Branch):

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice-President chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows:

Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

Bam. Over. Done. That’s it. He’s in the Executive Branch, no questions.

But, If you want more, again Article II, Section 1:

In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.)

Do you want more?

Article II, Section 4:

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Get your power hungry hands off my Constitution, you neo-con wackos.

Palin-Afganistan Commander ‘McClellan’!?

October 2, 2008

Really?

Gosh, golly Gov, I thought it was McKiernan.

And what did he say about a surge? Should we believe Gov. ‘I can see Russia from my Ski-Doo’ Palin, or Gen. McKiernan?

I’ll go with General McKiernan:

But there are countless other differences between Iraq and Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, it’s such a poor country, by any set of metrics you can imagine. A country that has very harsh geography. It’s very difficult to move around, getting back to our reliance on helicopters. It’s a country with very few natural resources, as opposed to the oil revenues that [Iraq] has. There’s very little money to be generated in terms of generated in Afghanistan. The literacy rate — you have a literate society in Iraq, you have a society that has a history of producing civil administrators, technocrats, middle class that are able to run the country in Iraq. You do not have that in Afghanistan. So there’s educational challenges, challenges of human capitol that I mentioned earlier.

So there are a lot of challenges. What I don’t think is needed — the word that I don’t use in Afghanistan is the word “surge.” There needs to be a sustained commitment of a variety of military and non-military resources, I believe. That’s my advice to winning in Afghanistan. It won’t be a short-term solution.

Move Embassy to Jerusalem!?

October 2, 2008

Wow! That would create so much conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, I don’t even know what to say.

Absolutely crazy.

This, first of all, is a policy statement not of just of where the embassy is, but where the capital of Israel should be enforced. That’s what you heard, not just an embassy move…a policy statement of whose jurisdiction Jerusalem should be under.

More later.

Our embassy is in Tel Aviv for a reason.
